DDR4 vs DDR5 for Gaming: Is It Worth Upgrading?
DDR5 is the newer memory standard, but is it actually worth it for gaming? Here's how DDR4 and DDR5 compare in the real world, and whether you should care.
The key differences
DDR5 offers higher bandwidth and faster speeds than DDR4. On paper the numbers are much bigger, but in games the real-world difference is often modest — usually a few percent, depending on the title and CPU.
It's tied to your platform
You can't just swap DDR4 for DDR5 — they use different slots and require a compatible motherboard and CPU. Choosing DDR5 usually means committing to a newer platform.
When DDR5 is worth it
- Building new: on a fresh build with a modern CPU, DDR5 is the sensible, future-proof choice.
- CPU-limited games: simulation, strategy and high-refresh esports benefit most from faster memory.
When to stick with DDR4
If you already own a solid DDR4 system, upgrading just for DDR5 usually isn't worth the cost of a new board, CPU and RAM. Fast DDR4 in dual-channel with XMP enabled remains excellent for gaming.
