How Much RAM Do You Need for Gaming in 2026?

Hardware buying guide · Updated for 2026

RAM is one of the cheapest upgrades you can make, but more isn't automatically better. Here's how much you actually need — and the detail most guides skip.

The short answer

Dual-channel matters more than capacity

Here's the part people miss: two sticks of 8 GB (2×8) will almost always outperform a single 16 GB stick. Running memory in dual-channel roughly doubles the bandwidth available to your CPU and integrated graphics, and in some games that's worth 10–20% more FPS for free. If you're buying RAM, buy it as a matched kit of two.

Speed and latency

For AMD Ryzen systems especially, memory speed affects gaming performance. DDR4-3200 to 3600 is the value sweet spot for older platforms, while newer DDR5 builds do well around DDR5-6000. You don't need the most expensive kit — you need a sensible speed running in dual-channel with the XMP/EXPO profile enabled in your BIOS.

How to tell if you need more

Open Task Manager while gaming and watch the Memory tab. If usage sits near 100% and you're seeing stutters or long loading hitches, you're memory-limited and should upgrade. If you're comfortably under, adding more RAM won't give you extra frames.
